The "Wussification" Of America

Excuse Me While I Stick My Finger In A Light Socket...

I swear that we can't legislate away Darwin's theory of "Survival of the Fittest"...

But our 'Gumment' Schrools keep on trying any way...

Check out this story where a couple of high school brothers were setting record time runs around the track when the idiots what be in charge stopped the race with one lap left because their "lightening detectors went off...

Talk about being stopped in your tracks ...

Joe Rosa, one of the top high school distance runners in the country, appeared to be on his way to breaking the New Jersey state record in the 3,200-meter run with a time worthy of being on the all-time national list when he was literally forced off the track by meet officials with one lap to go due to weather concerns.

Andrew Mills/The Star-Ledger

Meet officials force Joe Rosa off the track due to weather concerns. Rosa had one lap left of what appeared to be a record-breaking run in the 3,200.

Officials with the New Jersey Interscholastic State Athletic Association halted the eight-lap race as Rosa was preparing for his final lap, because lightning had been detected in the area. The meet was being held in Old Bridge, N.J.

NJSIAA officials made it clear: Rules dictate all events are halted and the competitors and fans must immediately leave the area if lightning is detected.

They would have had to pry my beer Coke out of my hand and arrested me twenty years ago to get me to leave the facility with one lap left in a race.

Today...maybe not so much...

...because I'm too old and tired of arguing with morons to give much of a damn any more...

...but still...

Government Induced Educational Inflation

Cheap Tuition Money Yields Cost Increases...

I know that I sometimes come across here on the blog as a pompous, egotistical, asshole.

Right?

It's not like I consciously try to be a public asshole/curmudgeon. Nor do I attempt to suppress the fact that I could be a closet asshole...an opinion that someone who knows me in real life might hold (hint...and some if not many in real life hold similar opinions)...but...

In my efforts to write for public consumption on a regular basis--virtually every day on the calendar--it's been an interesting journey to learn to mix and match words in the English language together to form a cohesive "voice" and consistent "style" to my writing.

I think I've found that "voice"--asshole or not--and although it may never be commercially successful i.e. generate any substantial income, it is my voice none the less and I'm happy with it at the moment.

AT LEAST I DON'T WRITE MOST OF THE TIME IN ALL CAPITOL LETTERS, WHICH IS THE LITERARY EQUIVALENT OF YELLING, and which in reality more accurately reflects the content of whats going on in my neurons and synapses in my head most of the time.

Any way, getting back to this morning's topic...

Edumacation Education Inflation.

Or more accurately (as stated in my title), government induced Education cost inflation.

And as the primary exhibit in defense of my theory/thesis this morning, I give you this New York Times Story about a 26 year old girl that owes nearly ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS in loans and interest after spending part of the past nine years studying for a chemical injuneering degree an MBA a PHD in underwater basketweaving ...wait...

...ready?

an "interdisciplinary degree in religious and women's studies."

WTF?

Somebody tell me, what the heck do you expect to be able to do with a "degree" in "religious and women's studies"?

I thought that only men did things like "women's studies" (unless you add the lesbian, gay, transgendered angle to the story,) and some forms of "studying women" is against the law if you happen to get too close to said woman and she objects to your proximity...

but I digress...

Here's the bottom line people.

Colleges are prone to offer the opportunity for you to spend money studying CRAP that might be interesting to you, might sound cool on the "Jeopardy" TV show when you mention you're willing to waste spend your time and money pursuing the endeavor, and will help you pick up pasty skinned metrosexual men or snitty liberal chicks at cocktail parties in San Francisco or NYC, BUT...

these same so-called "degrees" will at the same time do nothing when it comes to getting you out of the business of flipping hamburgers or selling used cars for a living.

As an example, since "graduation" the NY Times' woman with the $100,000 degree in "religious and women's studies" has managed to:

She recently received a raise and now makes $22 an hour working for a photographer. It's the highest salary she's earned since graduating with an interdisciplinary degree in religious and women's studies. After taxes, she takes home about $2,300 a month. Rent runs $750, and the full monthly payments on her student loans would be about $700 if they weren't being deferred, which would not leave a lot left over.

And no, don't start bashing me because my subject is a woman. It could just as easily be some dude with a six figure loan balance that partied his way to a degree in Philosophy or Middle Eastern History or Political Science.

Nothing WRONG with those subjects mind you, but unless you're independently wealthy or good enough to get a job as a college researcher/professor your life is pretty much going to consist of holding down a couple of part time bartender/waiter jobs while mailing over half your income to the bank holding the student loan(s.)

And you know what I believe is the most damning thing about our current rush--culturally and politically--to make it easy for everyone to attend college?

Tuition inflation.

Think about it for a minute.

It's happening.

And it's gotten worse since the 1970's--in the time frame that government has started low interest loan programs with Sally Mae and even as a result of college State lottery funded scholarship programs in states like Georgia and Tennessee.

The reality is, when everyone has a college degree, a college degree will mean little or nothing.

Chew on that concept for a minute.

Further, with everyone competing for a seat in classrooms on a college campus, with a wallet full of government guaranteed cheap tuition money, what incentive is left for colleges to compete with each other and keep education costs down?

Heck, schools like Georgia Tech--places that historically maintained slow annual growth in enrollment and was only about 11,000 undergrads in the late 1970's and early 1980's, are EXPLODING as they see the infusion of "HOPE Scholarship" money (Lottery Dollars.)

They can't buy land and tear down old buildings fast enough. Last time I drove though campus last winter they had closed half the streets and were building parking decks on the campus perimeter and filling in the old parking lots with new buildings.

It's just that simple, ladies and gentlemen.

As long as the government throws money at college in one form or the other, a college education is going to become less and less valuable because everyone will have a sheepskin, but by default possessing a degree won't magically transform any given individual into a "rocket scientist" or even a good employee with good work skills and attendance habits.

And what pisses me off is that Obama and the Obamamaniacs are in the process of passing legislation to make YOU, and more importantly ME, pay for these bimbos to study important crap like "women's studies."

And then when things don't work out and $100K is ill spent, they want the government--the same government which made the ill conceived loans possible--to step forward and "bail them out" of their situation...

She may finally be earning enough to barely scrape by while still making the payments for the first time since she graduated, at least until interest rates rise and the payments on her loans with variable rates spiral up. And while her job requires her to work nights and weekends sometimes, she probably should find a flexible second job to try to bring in a few extra hundred dollars a month.

Ms. Munna understands this tough love, buck up, buckle-down advice. But she also badly wants to call a do-over on the last decade. "I don't want to spend the rest of my life slaving away to pay for an education I got for four years and would happily give back," she said. "It feels wrong to me."

Yeah...RIGHT...feels wrong to me also, "Ms." Munna.

Stupid Government "Educator" Of The Day

The Thought Police Are Coming After Us...

So did you hear where some government educated moron currently employed out in Arizona in one of the aforementioned "Government (Public) Schools" suspended a Kindergartner for finding a knife on his way to school, picking it up, then leaving it on the side of the road off of school grounds?

What an idiot...and he runs a school?

I was pretty sure in my teen aged mind that some of the teachers they forced me to subject myself to back in the late 1960's and early/mid 1970's were stupid by any reasonable standard.

A couple of them were clinically insane and would be eating ADD/ADHD drugs in a bowl like cereal today.

And of course a few of them were just plain mean spirited and they used their position of government mandated authority to torture kids that didn't conform to the cookie cutter program they mindlessly purveyed.

Today if I were school aged I'd basically be forced to attend private reform school because of the silly crap I did, because most so called "educators" and the associated "administrators" don't know their own ass from a hole in the ground and can't make a logical decision if you held a gun to their head and threatened to blow their brains out if they failed to understand the difference between "thinking" about doing something and actually "doing" it (and of course I'll probably get a couple of comments from hyper-sensitive educators bitching because I wrote this rant...)

Tough tookies...Idiots...

Even More Crap What Pisses Me Off This Morning

Imperial Federal Government Assholes Politicians Gone Wild...

I swear to God, Ladies and Gentlemen, I think that we need to get together and steal a B-52 and Nuke the capitol mall in Washington DC with my latest invention--"The Rogers' Positronic Dirty Rat Bastard Tax & Spend Liberal Seeking Smart Bomb."

I call it the RPDRBTSLSSB for short...and looking at that acronym someone might like to buy a vowel...Alex...

Or maybe we should just get up a posse and go round up virtually everyone in the national elected political structure, Democrat and Republican, and gift wrap them each in their own burlap sacks with a couple of used bowling balls and tie the package up and toss the whole lot of them into the Potomac River.

Why, you might ask?

(and if you're with the CIA or FBI or other law enforcement agency read my entire blog before you put me on the no-fly list or come knocking on my door...I tend to write sort of over the top, in an absurd and obvious metaforical/silly ass harmless stupid Redneck manner here on this blog)

Because of crap like the stuff going on in this News story:

Newly anointed House Ways and Means Chairman Sander Levin (D-Mich.) repaid a Maryland property-tax credit Friday that he should not have received, his office confirmed.

Levin, who owns a home in Chevy Chase, Md., received a $690 credit on his most recent property tax bill, the result of Montgomery County program that provided one-time credits to residential property owners in the 2009-10 tax year.

...snip...

Levin replaced Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) at the Ways and Means Committee helm this week after pending ethics investigations forced Rangel to step down from the post.

The ethics committee admonished Rangel in February for taking part in two trips to the Caribbean that violated House rules, citing his staff’s knowledge that the trips received prohibited corporate funding.

The Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, commonly known as the ethics panel, is also still reviewing Rangel’s personal finances under an investigation opened in September 2008.

That review includes Rangel’s failure to report rental income from a Dominican beach house; his lease of three rent-controlled apartments in his district; his use of House parking facilities for long-term vehicle storage; personal assets he failed to report on financial disclosures; and his fundraising efforts for a City College of New York facility named in his honor. Rangel has denied any wrongdoing.

Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), the second-ranking Ways and Means Committee member who was passed over for the chairmanship, also recently faced an ethics committee review of his Maryland home.

The way I would handle things is this simple.

Just ask the question: "Will the person on the finance committee who/whom (I can never get that right) has filed and paid their taxes correctly please stand up, and everybody else run to the restroom or take a smoke break?"

Notice I don't use the word "persons" intentionally?

That is because I bet that there's a good chance that you'd be looking at an empty room, except possibly a couple of Aids or Secretaries Administrative Assistants or Monaca Lewinskies Interns.

Right?

You see, it just pisses me of when the same elected idiots which keep getting appointed further up the government food chain to the Chairmanships/Chairwoman-manships and that think nothing of jumping my Federal income tax rates 3 to 5% or more in the next couple of years...and at the same time can cavalierly indicate to "working families" and the "disenfranchised" earned income credit whores that I owe them $5000 of my money in the form of a "Capitol Gains" tax for taking the risk of buying real estate with CASH...CASH MONEY I already paid income tax on when I earned it and managed to keep some of it...

(taking a deep breath here boss...)

yet these idiots, men and women who are paid $174,000 each year for their so-called "service" in the US Senate and House (and get an automatic raise each year unless they as a group vote against it,) are constantly over and Over and OVER...and over and over and over and over and under and over.... caught and eventually embarrassed into having to belatedly pay back stupid little itty bitty sums like $690 when their finances and taxes come under the microscope of the national lamestream media--a media which willingly turns a blind eye as often as is possible if you happen to have a "(D)" beside your name on the election ballot.

They want to pass laws and spend money and tax me and you, yet they try to get away with silly, stupid little omissions like that and I bet you $10 that this same circumstance of "omissions" is almost across the board with these elitist bastards/bitches.

The way I see things, and based on some negative personal experience from my own past in the form of innocent, ignorant mistakes on various and sundry local and state and federal tax "issues"...

I would never try to get away with silly crap like scamming the Property Tax "Homestead Exemption" or any one of the other intrusive, bullshit taxes the elected geniuses levy on my ever greying, ever balding head and wallet.

It just isn't worth it if there isn't at least five or six figures behind the dollar sign (that would mean $10,000 to something over $100,000 for those of you that went to college at the Universities of Tennessee or Georgia.)

Yet it seems to me that almost EVERY SINGLE TIME someone gets elected or appointed to anything from the title of "Presidential Dog Washer" to "Head Ho' What Run the House" they have to go digging into the file cabinets in their fifth or sixth bedroom or make calls to their accountant in NYC and get a bottle of "Whiteout" or an eraser and smudge their way back into compliance with INCOME TAX LAWS...

"laws" which they insist on foisting on the rest of us working stiffs without a bit of regard for the amount of effort it takes to comply with their legalized robbery money grubbing political pandering BS.

I've had it up to here People (pointing to the top of the aforementioned ever greying ever balding head), and I'm tired of the Government looking to me as a slave and a source of ever increasing "Income," and I'm tired of other people (but not necessarily YOU there reading this blog if you carry your own financial freight) looking to the Imperial By-God Federal Government of the United States of 'Merica as a SOURCE of their own income and benefits.

...taking a couple more breaths here...

OK, 'nuff said I guess...I have to go to bed now in anticipation of enduring 8 hours on the intestate highway system...something I gladly pay my taxes for in order to keep it maintained, but otherwise I want everyone to just get the hell out... Mr./Mrs./Transgendered Politician/Tax Collector, and leave me and my girl and my dog and my wallet ALONE...

Is that too much to ask?

You're dismissed then...And that will be all...for now...

Are You Government Schooled?

Actually, I think Someone Should Be Schooling The Government Instead

Check out this story about some public schools in NY State spending $64,000 per student per school year.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It's a new twist on the $64,000 question. That's what the richest schools in New York state spend per pupil.

And now the nonprofit Citizens Budget Commission says the state should phase out funds for the wealthiest public schools, or the top 10 percent, some of which spend $64,000 per student -- six times what the bottom 10 percent spend -- in a report released on Tuesday.

SIXTY FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS?

For snot nosed kids in grades one through twelve?

Are they serious?

I did a little checking around , and according to the OCAN College Cost Database Website, last year you could go to Harvard for $46,450.00, Yale for $46,700.00, and a year at New York's Columbia University only costs $35,745.00...

Get this...those prices include room and board!!!!!!

Taking a big breath here...I have to ask:

What the hell are they thinking up there in New York, and what exactly are they getting for their money?

I did some more snooping around and I can't find data for last year, but according to
this Manhattan Institute Report, in 2002 New York public schools has a drop out rate of 30%.

I guess that I can hardly complain because Georgia's number for that year was 46%, but then again we're bitching and complaining to our local school boards and other elected politicians when we spend ten or fifteen thousand dollars per pupil.

(While I'm mentioning Georgia's educational performance, let me say that I blame the parents and the kids along with the so-called professional educators for the abysmal performance. Spending the amount of money we spend and only getting 4% more than half to make it through 12 years of "FREE SCHOOL" is not just sad--it verges on criminal.)

Still, I don't think that there is a direct one to one correlation on dollars spent versus the graduation rate, but if there was, and using the differential between Georgia and New York as a basis ($3062 per 1% improvement in graduation rate), then throwing money at the problem would require that NY schools spend...get ready

a whopping $155,860 per year per pupil.

(Georgia would actually in theory get 100% graduation for $140,852...what a bargain!)

I don't know people, but I'm glad that I never reproduced and I really feel sorry for those of you with kids in public schools. Look for the professional teachers unions and their slaves--the politicians--to continue to waste your money and ignore the idea of vouchers to allow you to pick your kids school.

Imagine what kind of education NY parents could get for their little darlin's if they took $32,000 per year to buy tuition in a private school and let the NY government keep the other half to avoid depriving all of those disadvantaged kids, both real and imagined.

By the way...based on examples like this, isn't it going to be wonderful when you let the government start handling your Health care?

Heh...notice that the "real" news reporter didn't tell you any of this stuff in the news article?

.
