(NY Times Headline True To Form)

I just checked the New York Times Web site this morning and here is the headline and beginning of the story about President Bush's news conference last night:


Bush Cites Plan That Would Cut Social Security Benefits

WASHINGTON, April 28 - President Bush called Thursday night for cutting Social Security benefits for future retirees to put the system on sound financial footing, and he proposed doing so in a way that would demand the most sacrifice from higher-income people while insulating low-income workers.

Now I'm not going to argue that the opening paragraph is a reasonably accurate summary of the the President's statements, but the headline is so darn typical--scare the old people.

Anything to rile up the AARP.

They couldn't say "Bush Plan Cuts Benefits To Future Retirees."

Or how about "Plan To Cut Future Retiree Benefits Proposed."

Maybe I'm biased, but the people out there that get their news by reading headlines while standing in the grocery store checkout line might be mis-informed by the NY Times effort.

Is it just me?
